Exclusive Excerpt:

“Now, what is a pretty thing like you doing sitting at the bar all by yourself?”
My head turns at the sound of the deep voice, my eyes landing on an arrogant smile. I quickly scan the rest of his face. Crystal-blue eyes. Nose that’s just slightly too big for his face. Defined cheekbones. Megawatt smile. Dimpled chin. He looks to be in his early thirties. Not old by any means, but at least seven or eight years older than my twenty-three years. He slides onto the stool to my right. Even though he’s sitting, I still have to tilt my head back to meet his gaze. He signals the bartender and leans into me. “What are you drinking tonight, gorgeous?”
I slant my body to the left, trying to widen the gap between us. This guy clearly doesn’t understand the concept of personal space. I glance down at his attire. Suit, tie, perfectly polished shoes. Everything about this guy screams confidence. Gorgeous, well dressed, and if the watch on his wrist is any indication, loaded. Every girl’s fantasy, right?
Wrong.
I look past him, scanning the crowd for Amanda. Her boyfriend, Justin, tends bar here on weekends. He’s the reason we’re here tonight. He’s also the reason I’m sitting here alone. His break started a few minutes ago, and he and Amanda immediately took off toward the dance floor.
Mr. Perfect reaches out and brushes my hair over my shoulder, his fingers lingering on my collarbone. Clearly oblivious to my silence and current search of rescue, he trails his fingers along the side of my neck. I shudder.
Mistaking my revulsion for desire, he leans in closer. When I turn to face him, I see his
eyes drift shut as he draws near. His mouth forms a small pucker and he stops just inches from my face. I stare at that mouth. Is this guy for real?
His eyes flicker open, those baby blues peering up at me through hooded lids. When he sees where my eyes are settled, the corners of his mouth curl up into a wry grin. I pull back just as he tries to close the distance between us.
He doesn’t take kindly to my rejection. Darkness fills his eyes and a small frown tugs at the corners of his lips. But he quickly regains his composure, laughing at me softly.
“Hard to get, eh? I like that.” He winks, continuing to laugh like we’re both in on some private joke. I look around again. Where in the hell is Amanda?
The bartender finally makes his way over to us, giving me a temporary reprieve from the man’s scrutiny.
“My usual, Jimmy. And another of whatever this pretty lady is having.”
Jimmy nods curtly and turns to prepare the man’s drink order. As he moves, I see a slight roll of his eyes. I’m guessing this isn’t the first time my new friend here has tried to pick someone up in this place.
The man interrupts my thoughts. “I’m Bruce. Phillips. Phillips and Lambert Real Estate. You may have seen our signs around town. Best in the biz, if I do say so myself. Buying or selling, we’re in a class by ourselves.” He extends his card to me. I stare at it blankly. That awful slogan is plastered across the top. When I don’t reach to take it, he shrugs and tucks it back inside his jacket pocket.
“So, cat got your tongue? Do you have a name, sweetheart?”
I decide I’ve had enough of his attempted sweet talk and those heated glances. I turn and place both elbows on the bar, cradling my drink between my fingers. Without meeting his gaze, I
take a sip and finally put him out of his misery.
“Not interested.”
“Well, that sure is an interesting name. Can’t say I’ve heard that one before.” He gives me a sideways grin, his attempts at charm failing miserably on me. I resist the urge to roll my eyes, instead letting out an exasperated sigh.
“Look, I get it. I get the cocky attitude and the confident swagger. I’m sure you’ve got women falling down around you. Begging you to take them home, to give them one night they’ll never forget. And so on and so forth,” I say with a dismissive wave of my hand. This time I’m unable to contain my eye roll. I turn on my seat, looking him square in the eye.
“I’m sure your next line will be that any girl in this place would kill to be in my position right now. So why don’t you go ahead and save yourself the time and effort and go find one of them? Because this—” I gesture between the two of us “—is not happening.” With that, I turn away from him, placing my elbows back on the bar in front of me. I can see the stunned look on his face out of the corner of my eye. His mouth opens and closes, giving him the appearance of a fish out of water. Hoping he’s taken my not-so-subtle hint, I down the rest of my drink and start to stand.
As soon as my feet touch the floor, a rough hand closes around my arm, halting my movement. I stumble back to my seat, staring up at the man. What the fuck does he think he’s doing?
He towers over me. He has at least six inches on my five foot nine. The anger I saw in his eyes has returned. Only this time it’s deepened. He looks furious.
“Look here, you stupid bitch. I don’t know who you think you are, but nobody talks to me like that,” he growls. His fingers tighten on my arm, nails digging into my skin. I squirm, trying to break free of his hold. It only results in more pressure. I can feel the bruises already starting to form.
“Now. You’re going to sit here and enjoy that drink I so generously bought for you. And you’re going to tell me your name and laugh at my jokes. And when I say it’s time, you’re going to leave here with me. You got that?”
My sharp words and tough-girl persona disappear in a matter of seconds. I feel the panic rising in my chest, the sweat breaking out along my hairline. I’ve had to deal with unwarranted advances before. But not like this. Usually men just slink off, calling me a bitch and finding someone else to lick their wounds and stroke their ego. But not this man. I’m in over my head here and I know it. My eyes desperately search for Amanda or Justin. Anyone I know who can help me. I come up empty.

“P-please. Just let me go.” My voice is barely audible over the loud music booming off the walls of the club. I hate the meager sound of my words. I hate that this bastard has reduced me to this. Helpless—something I haven’t felt in years. A few ugly words and a strong arm and I’m back to where I was. Where I’ve tried so hard to never return again.

Release Blitz ~ Love Wasted by Shirl Rickman

Title: Love Wasted
Author: Shirl Rickman
Genre: NA Romance
Release Date: June 22, 2017

She loves him. She loves him not.
When Cassandra Porter was seven years old, she fell in love with her next door neighbor and her best friends brother. Cass loved that boy every single day…until he broke her heart and all that remained were the pieces.
Ten years and what feels like a lifetime apart, that boy—now a grown and sexy, warm blooded man—is thrust back into her life. He might make her temper flair and blood boil, but a few unresolved feelings are no match for the way her heart races when he is near…
She drives him the good kind of crazy.
Paxton Luke led his life with one thing on his mind: success. Friends and family come first, with no room for emotional attachments—not even with the neighbor girl, who's turned into a complete knockout. His sister's best friend. Emotions only lead to love, and love was trouble.
They’re determined to fight this undeniable attraction to the bitter end. It’s too damn bad their hearts are about to get love drunk-- wasted on love.

Several questions are swirling through my mind at this hour of the night.

For example,  when I try to stand, is this little paper toilet seat cover going to stick to my ass? Are my feet numb from the champagne or the magenta stilettoes I'm wearing? Or why am I sitting in the bathroom stall of a bar, staring at the sticky, alcohol laden floor? Not to mention the most important question of the night, one I will never admit out loud, why I can't get the picture of the brunette, hanging on Paxton all night, plunging to her death from a cliff out of my head?
Oh, hell. I need to stop. There's only one person who can distract me from my dumb, girl emotions. Laney.

Taking my phone from my clutch, I tap Laney's name under my favorites. When it begins to ring, I stand up, wobbling a little while shimmying my panties up my legs and pulling the bottom of my gold mini dress back down from around my waist. A giggle slips past my lips when I think of the hot mess I am tonight.

As Laney's voicemail echoes in my ear, I fall against the wall of the bathroom stall. "Dammit, Laney! I really wish you would've answered,' I hollered into the phone unnecessarily. The sounds of feminine chatter drifting from two stalls down from girls making one last dash to the ladies room before the countdown. I lower my voice, "Happy New Year. God, I wish you were here." I sigh. "You'd tell me like it is...you'd stop me from doing something stupid. But, you're not here, and when I do that stupid thing, I'm going to blame you. Just a friendly warning." Pausing, I stare at the writing on the side of the stall and admire the use of the words love and forever written in twirly letters full of hope. I'm sure the voicemail is going to shut off any moment, so I say my goodbye. "Anyway, I love you, Laney...like whoa and don't you forget it."

Ending the call, I glance at the time before opening my clutch and dropping it in. I have five minutes until midnight. Pushing the door open, I wobble my way out, slowly making it over to the sink. I wash my hands, drying them before I freshen up with a touch of hot pink gloss and a fluff of my hair.  One final look and I approve.

Shirl Rickman is a writer, a dreamer, and an optimist. A small town Texas girl currently residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shirl adores her husband, daughter, and two crazy dogs. Strong Enough

by Melanie Harlow & David Romanov

Genre: Contemporary MM Romance

Publication Date: June 19, 2017

I wasn’t looking for Derek Wolfe.

I wasn’t looking for anybody. All I wanted was to start a new life in America. But when I found myself stranded here with no place to go, he came to my rescue, offering me a place to stay.

He’s smart, successful, and sexy as hell—I can barely sleep knowing he’s right down the hall. And when the chemistry between us explodes one night with fierce, fiery passion, it’s hard to deny there’s something real between us.

But he does.

He says he was drunk. He says it was a one-time thing. He says he’s not into guys and what we did meant nothing.

He’s lying. Because it happened again, and again, and again. And it’s better every time.

I know we could be good together, and I want the chance to try, but I’m done hiding. If he’s not strong enough to admit the truth, I’ll have to be strong enough to walk away.

Excerpt:

Figuring I’d had enough booze to blunt his effect on me, I rolled up the sleeves of my black button-down shirt and moved next to him. “I’ll help you.”
“Okay.”
I caught him trying to not to look at my wrists and forearms, and it made me smile. How does it feel to want someone and have to hide it? “You wash, I’ll dry?”
“Sounds good.”
We worked in silence, shoulder to shoulder, and I found myself increasingly—and disturbingly—pleased at the thought of him being attracted to me and being forced to conceal it. It was fucking horrible of me to take pleasure in his discomfort, but I liked being secretly wanted. Being illicitly desired. Being the object of his covert glances and maybe even his darkest, dirtiest thoughts. I let our arms touch more than necessary, as thrilled by the physical contact as I was by the thought of what it might be doing to him.
For there is no man who does not sin.
My dick started to get hard, clearly unbothered by the whiskey that was breaking down my inhibitions, pushing past all my defenses, and letting my imagination run wild.
What’s in that gorgeous head of yours, Maxim? What’s behind those cobalt eyes? What would you do to me, if I let you? What would you let me do to you?
“Carolyn is so nice,” he said, handing me the last serving dish left to be dried.
What? He was thinking about Carolyn right now? He wasn’t supposed to be thinking about Carolyn—I was, goddammit!
But I wasn’t. “Yeah.”
He turned off the water. Rested his wet hands on the edge of the sink. “I didn’t realize you had a girlfriend.”
And I heard it in his voice—the slightest edge of jealousy, so faint I might never have noticed it had I not been so hyperaware of everything about him right now. I fucking loved it.
“She’s not my girlfriend.”
“Oh.” Now there was confusion. “I guess I misunderstood.”
“She wants to be my girlfriend.”
Silence.
Of course there was silence. Maxim would never ask what the problem was. But I wanted to tell him. I wanted him to know. I wanted to share the impossible longing I felt with one person who might understand it.
“The problem is me.”
He was completely still. Before I could stop myself, I covered his right hand with my left. “Sometimes I don’t know what I want.”
He yanked his hand from beneath mine and we faced each other.
For the first time tonight, I looked him right in the eye. Nothing around us existed for me anymore. I heard only his breath. Smelled only his skin. Saw only his guarded expression.

I had to have him.

I thought my life would forever be defined by tragedy.

The happily ever after I thought I had, ended prematurely and painfully. My daughter and I were stuck in a fog of self-preservation, afraid to believe that there wasn’t more pain waiting for us in the ‘real world’. Just the thought of allowing myself to embrace happiness and take a risk in order to feel that all-consuming love again is terrifying. And I’m not sure I would be able to survive if it all went away again. But… what choice do I have when I’m tied up in these heartstrings? I could cut the ties and run. Or I could take a chance on someone that my heart once yearned for and hope that he knows how to untangle the fear that holds my heart hostage.

Excerpt
Alexis   (18 months ago)

Jed designed this home especially for usevery detail. Until recently, Ive loved everything about living here for the past five years. Now Im drowning in the memories and details hiding in each crevice and having the memories crash into me at every corner is too much. Im just waiting for the massive undertow of these constant reminders to drag me under. This house might have once been my dream home, but its not anymore. Now Im suffocating in it.

Who builds their picture-perfect dream house as their very first home? Its not normal, but being the perfectionist Jed was, he couldnt have it any other way. He strived to give us everything one could ever want or wish for, but it was at the expense of sacrificing time with Sierra and me to provide it. He wasnt wired to reject us in any way, except with the most important thing either of us wantedhis presence. If only he couldve been satisfied with a simpler life. We wouldve been happier with less if it meant having him around more.

Hed proudly tell us he was working hard so he could lay the moon and stars at our feet, and we always had the best of everything, even if I didnt need that. For Jed, it didnt matter. He thought we deserved the best and never settled for less. I didnt understand, but in his eyes, the image of the materialistic wealth he worked so hard for somehow signified his love, commitment, and loyalty to his family. Plus, the approval from outsiders mattered to him, and accolades drove him even harder.

His career was an obsession, measuring his success with every step up the corporate ladder, but it was never enough. Maybe if he werent hyper focused on that ambition, hed be here now? We could still be an us’—whole and complete.

I round the corner to the kitchen to find my brother and his wife sitting at the farm table talking softly to one another while the others mingle in the adjoining family room. Jasons posture changes as soon he notices me step into the room, and Kate whispers something to him as they both attempt to hide their exhaustion and worried expressions. Why fake it anymore, but whatever makes them feel better. My sister-in-law jumps up, extending her arm out to embrace me, and my brother is quickly beside her as I approach her open arms.

Whats up, babe? Are you hungry?Kate asks a little too hopeful as I step into her hold. I shake my head before resting it momentarily on her shoulder then pull away slowly.

You should probably eat something. Do you want to take a nap or rest for a bit? You havent slept in days, and the house will be cleared out soon.Jason prattles franticly, barely taking a breath between each question that is really more of a suggestion.

Im not sure what hes thinking, though; none of it makes sense realistically. Who could possibly casually eat and sleep while their entire world is crumbling around them? Im being buried alive with the guilt amongst the rubble of that plane crash, and Im somehow supposed to take care of my health while I dig for my life. The idea is insane!

The emotional roller coaster from the fluctuations of sadness, anger, and fear are overwhelming, and its taking a toll, making me an extra-bitchy crazy person. As long as Im getting plenty of rest and eating a proper diet, I suppose anything goes. Nonsense.

Frustrated, I take a deep breath, and although trembling, I find my voice. Jason, I need to leave and get out of this town for a little while. Can you help me figure out a plan?I plead.

Despite being a seriously overprotective older brother growing up, he has always been my white knightsaving the day whether I want him to not. Im habitually resistant to his overbearing tendencies and try to avoid directly asking for his help, but today, Im grateful for his presence in dealing with this nightmare. Ill gladly accept his control freak tendencies in exchange, especially since Id rather escape it.

For the past eleven days, Ive risen from the bed every morning, hoping after another sleepless night that this is just a nightmare that will fade with the light of day, but it hasnt. Each passing day, the nightmare becomes more and more real, leaving me a weak and incredibly vulnerable version of myself. Ive fought tooth and nail for a long time to prove to my brother I could be self-sufficient and make my own decisions. He finally accepted that I was filled with pride, but this changes everything. I need him more now than ever before.

Getting back to anything normal with this giant hole inside my chest feels impossible. Im empty, and I have no idea how to fix it.

Just when my life seemed manageable, I’m thrown radically off course by “the one”. “The one” I wasn’t expecting. “The one” I never knew I wanted. “The one” who single handedly holds the key to the tattered lock safeguarding my heart. Letting someone into my protected sanctuary will only serve one purpose - intentional infliction of pain and heartache… and I’m positive I’m not capable of handling that.

New Rules: 1. Avoid LOVE at all costs. 2. No complications. 3. I will not become ‘dick’matized by the hotshot guitarist. It was only a no-strings attached weekend. 4. The lyrics he writes may seem magical, but it’s a façade. Lyrics can’t mend broken heartstrings – no matter how strong my heart swells with his words.

Love comes easy to some. It came easy to me. Loving him was never an issue. Appreciating him was as easy as breathing. Years of living a life of what others viewed as perfection gave me the security I thought was most valuable.

My marriage to Drake is symbolic of what others fight for, yet living in the glass house of perfection is the biggest challenge of my life. Life isn’t always what it seems. People change. Everyone has demons they fight and fighting them in secret to avoid letting others down takes its toll. Love came easy, but maintaining it is a whole different game. I thought the happily ever after would be the end of the story. That wasn’t the case. There’s so much more. It’s only so long before the glass house of perfection is clouded with buried secrets. Can we overcome this and get back to a place of true happiness, or will I always feel like I’m perfecting my acting skills to save face? Can I ever find the ending to this fairy tale life I wanted so desperately?

Dear Bridget,
I’m writing this letter because it’s highly doubtful I’ll ever garner the courage to say this to your face.
So, here goes.
We’re totally wrong for each other. You’re the proper single mum with a good head on your shoulders. I’m just the carefree British doctor passing through town and temporarily living in your converted garage until I head back to England.
But here’s the thing… for some bloody reason, I can’t stop thinking about you in very inappropriate ways.
I want you.
The only reason I’m even admitting all of this to you right now is because I don’t believe it’s one-sided. I notice your eyes when you look at me, too. And as crass as I appear when we’re joking around about sex, my attraction to you is not a joke.
So, what’s the purpose of this note? I guess it’s a reminder that we’re adults, that sex is healthy and natural, and that you can find me just through the door past the kitchen. More specifically, it’s to let you know that I’m leaving said door cracked open from now on in case you’d like to visit me in the middle of the night sometime.
No questions asked.
Think about it.
Or don’t.
Whatever you choose.
It’s doubtful I’ll even end up sliding this letter under your door anyway.
